Sanctuary Farm is the continuation of a family’s journey in Kenya, offering guests the same sense of belonging and connection that has guided us for decades.
Our story begins with Sir Derek Erskine, who was among the few of his British peers to stand for Kenyan independence and support the first president, Jomo Kenyatta. While many of his contemporaries returned to Britain after independence, Derek chose to remain and help build a new nation alongside his fellow Kenyans.
His son, Francis, purchased Sanctuary Farm in 1974 as a home for himself and his racehorses. Francis’s son Guy later married Julie, a Kenyan-born Brit whose love of cooking, painting, and hosting transformed Sanctuary Farm from a private farm into a welcoming destination for travelers from near and far. Although Julie passed away in 2017, her spirit of hospitality and warmth continue to guide the way we welcome every guest.
Julie and Guy’s children have carried this legacy forward in their own ways. Their eldest, Jamie, became an architect and designed many of the inspiring spaces that guests enjoy during their stays. Their daughter, Quillie, inherited her mother’s love of horses and helped develop the equestrian experiences that remain a highlight for visitors. Their younger son Felix, along with his wife Muhabi and their son Cosmo, are the hosts you will meet during your time at Sanctuary Farm. Felix is a passionate gardener, sailor, and fisherman, and Muhabi is a gifted musician who brings people together through music and events. Together, they love welcoming both local Kenyan families and international visitors who come to Naivasha to experience the farm’s unique charm.
Today, Sanctuary Farm is more than a destination. It is a living, working farm and wildlife conservancy where people from all walks of life can connect with nature, enjoy authentic hospitality, and share memorable experiences. Whether you are traveling from Nairobi for the weekend, exploring Kenya from abroad, or discovering Naivasha as a local family, you are warmly welcomed here as part of our extended family.
